about

Saturday morning, I arrive at the studio, it is nine o'clock. There is no one there. I turn on the lights, the spots only, not the neon tubes which make noise. Switch on the power, shut the door, unplug the telephone. I switch on the mixing console which sends an electronic impulse into the amplifiers, and the four loudspeakers react individually with a short, very low sigh.
As if somebody was there.
I have not listened to anything since last night, my ear is refreshed by last nights' sleep. I feed the original mix into the master recorder and sit down in the center.
Remote control: PLAY
As the sound comes on I close my eyes. The studio disappears instantaneously. Another place, another much larger space opens up.
I enter it.

Stop ! l'horizon (1983), 18’09

I have the very distinct feeling that music is only a “grand noise”, and its interior sculpted in a thousand details. It opens like a living organism to let my hearing wander around in it. Very soon a magnetic relation is established and all the sounds which constitute the grand noise draw me towards an orient. I accept this direction.
Later, much later, I reach a distant point on the horizon which pulls me towards it.

Profil-Désir (1988), 18’51

I open my eyes for a moment. I stare. The VU-meters are still. Studio silence.
Then I receive the first sound right in the middle of my head, a gentle vibration which will grow rapidly and occupy the whole listening space.
The shape of desire, its profile, is of musical essence.
I recognize the way it begins, the way it floods the body and ignites the mind.
The desire stops, it is suspended in expectation or stabilized on a temporary level, then builds up again and grows towards a new resolution.
It forms again.

Courir (1989) 15’14

Another new sound, another colour.
Real presence of a person establishing his rhythm.
I again picture the point of departure: one single recording with the microphone right up against the mouth. To run as fast and long as possible; speed up the entire body machine to achieve a state where the mind is short circuited, literally stopped.

Saturday morning, it is ten o'clock.
Ch. Zanési

PS.: I remember this very moment the first electroacoustic record I happened to listen to. On the upper left corner on the back of the prestigious cover, there was a suggestion for listening which radically modified my musical awareness: “This record should be listened to in the dark and at high volume”.

------
